Most bettors look at league tables and recent results. Smart bettors look at the numbers underneath the results — the ones that predict future outcomes rather than describe past ones. You don't need to be a data scientist. You just need to track five statistics consistently, understand what they mean, and apply them before placing a bet.
1. xG (Expected Goals): xG measures the quality of every shot taken, based on location, angle, and assist type. A shot from six yards in the centre of the box scores an xG of roughly 0.75. A long-range effort from 30 yards scores around 0.03. When a team's actual goals significantly exceed their xG over 5+ matches, they are likely overperforming — regression is coming. When actual goals are below xG, they are unlucky — positive regression is coming. Bet with regression, not against it.
2. xGA (Expected Goals Against): The defensive equivalent of xG. xGA tells you the quality of chances a team is conceding, regardless of whether they went in. A team with low xGA is genuinely controlling games defensively. A team with high actual clean sheets but high xGA is living on luck — their goalkeeper is covering for a porous defence. Always check xGA before backing clean sheets or under 2.5 goals.
3. PPDA (Passes Allowed Per Defensive Action): PPDA measures pressing intensity. A low PPDA (under 8) means a team presses aggressively — forcing mistakes high up the pitch. A high PPDA (over 12) means a team defends deep. This is crucial for total goals betting: high-press teams force more errors, create more transitions, and produce more goalmouth action. When two high-press sides meet, over 2.5 goals is strongly favoured.
4. Big Chance Conversion Rate: This is the percentage of clear-cut chances a team converts. Over a full season, this stabilises around the league average. Teams converting above 35% of big chances are running hot. Teams converting below 20% are due a run of goals. Track this over rolling 6-match windows — when a clinical striker starts missing big chances, their team's over 2.5 value drops significantly.
5. Points Per Game (Last 6 Matches): Recency matters. A team that was top of the league 10 games ago but has taken 4 points from their last 6 is in crisis mode. Conversely, a mid-table team who has taken 14 points from 18 in their last 6 is in form and underpriced. Always weight the last 6 matches more heavily than the season average.
